The Swedish Building Maintenance Workers´ Union
Our union was founded in 1936, at that time with a membership of 3,000. Today we are about 35,000 members.
We organise building maintenance workers employed by private, municipal and co-operative property owners, cleaners in cleaning companies, window cleaners and employees of Folkets Hus (Labour Movement Community Centres).
Both direct and representative democracy is applied within the Building Maintenance Workers´ Union. All members have the right to participate in decision-making at club and section meetings. In the branches and the national union the decision-making is via representatives. We have about 300 union liaison officers, about 300 company clubs, 105 sections and 11 branches. At least one trade union official employed by the national union works in each branch.
The Swedish Building Maintenance Workers´ Union, together with 14 other trade unions, is affiliated to the Swedish Trade Union Confederation, LO. We are affiliated to the Nordic organisation SUN and the Property Services Sector of Union Network International, UNI. Through LO we are affiliated to the International Trade Union Confederation, the ITUC.
